The Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office has charged an Elkhart man with ten felony counts of Possession of Child Sex Abuse Material, each a Level 5 Felony, after the Elkhart Police Department arrested him on September 30, 2026, as part of an Indiana Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force investigation.

The Elkhart County Bomb Squad investigated a suspicious briefcase and backpack located earlier today outside 3600 Cassopolis St (CVS). Bomb Squad techs safely opened both suspicious items. There were no explosive devices and there is no continuing threat to the public.

A 38-year-old man is in custody on September 22, 2026, after looking in school windows and jumping in the river in the 900 block of E. Beardsley Ave to evade Elkhart Police Department officers. He subsequently fled the hospital where he was released from custody in order to secure medical treatment for pre-existing conditions. Officers detained him at 12:31 p.m. near S. Highland Ave and W. Lexington Ave. 

Based on the totality of the circumstances and the subsequent events, the subject was placed under arrest. He was booked into the Elkhart County Jail on 9/23/26 and subsequently formally charged with Criminal Trespass, a Level 6 Felony; two counts of Resisting Law Enforcement, each a Level 6 Felony; Criminal Vandalism, a Class B Misdemeanor; and Public Nudity, a Class C Misdemeanor. Please be advised that under Indiana law an individual is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Elkhart Police Officers are investigating after a 911 call reported a possible bomb threat in the Elkhart High School Freshman Division parking lot (occurring on Sept. 15, 2026). No bomb was located, and initial investigation indicates that this was not a credible threat.

The Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office has charged an Elkhart man, Jeffery Estep, 35 years old, with Attempted Murder, a Level 1 Felony, in a July 23, 2026, stabbing in which the male victim sustained a severe head injury.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is actively investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on September 7, 2026, in the 300 block of Pierre Moran Dr, Elkhart, in which a 21-year-old woman died. Homicide Unit detectives arrested a 17-year-old male on a preliminary charge of Reckless Homicide in connection with this investigation and transported him to the Juvenile Detention Center. The investigation remains ongoing.

The Elkhart Police Department is actively investigating an early-morning shooting from September 7, 2026, in which two people sustained non-life threatening injuries. A search warrant was executed in the 200 block of W. Simonton St in connection with this investigation.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is investigating after a body was discovered on top of a train in the Norfolk Southern Railroad train yard on September 3, 2026 (2600 block of W. Lusher Ave, Elkhart).

On August 31, 2026, Elkhart Police Department Officers responded to a call reporting a possibly deceased man in a parked vehicle at 110 Northpointe Dr. There was no indication of foul play, and the Elkhart County Homicide Unit is not handling the investigation.

The Elkhart Police Department is actively investigating a shooting that occurred late August 23, 2026, around the 1100 block of Grant St, Elkhart, in which a teenage boy sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The Elkhart Police Department is actively investigating a shooting that occurred earlier this morning in front of 245 W. Hively Ave, Elkhart, in which multiple individuals were involved. One individual sustained non-life threatening injuries and was subsequently taken into custody.

The Elkhart Police Department is actively investigating a serious bodily injury motorcycle and semi-truck crash that the evening of August 20, 2026, at S Main St (US Highway 33) and US Highway 20, Elkhart.

Mayor Rod Roberson swore in two (2) new Elkhart Police Officers during this morning’s Police Merit Commission Meeting. The hiring of these officers brings the department’s staff to one hundred and thirty (130) of the budgeted one hundred and forty-three (143) officers.
