News Release-Elkhart Police Department Crash Team Investigating Fatal Vehicle Vs. Pedestrian Crash, Co Rd 4/Cassopolis St, 10.9.26

The Elkhart Police Department Crash Team is actively investigating a fatal vehicle vs. pedestrian crash that occurred this evening near 26399 Co Rd 4/Cassopolis St, Elkhart.

This evening, October 9, 2026, at about 7:59 p.m., the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received a 911 call reporting that a vehicle had struck a pedestrian near the intersection of Co Rd 4/Cassopolis St. Elkhart Police Department officers and first responders dispatched and arrived shortly thereafter. Upon arrival, first responders encountered an unresponsive adult female. Elkhart Fire Department medics rendered first aid but, despite life-saving measures, the woman was sadly pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Initial investigation indicates that a Jeep Wrangler traveling north on Cassopolis St struck the female pedestrian in the roadway. The male Wrangler driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. At this time, the deceased pedestrian has not been positively identified. The Elkhart Police Department Crash Team was activated, per protocol, and is handling the investigation.
