NYC # 3001 Mohawk
NYC # 3001 L-3a class 4-8-2 Mohawk (Mountain)-type steam locomotive built in October 1940 by American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Schenectady, New York (Alco #69338)
Quick Facts:
- The largest remaining New York Central Mohawk. One of two surviving NYC 4-8-2 engines
- Lakeshore Railroad Historical Foundation (LRHF) founded by Robert G. “Bob” Spaugh in the 1976 with the goal of bringing the Mohawk “home” to Elkhart and restoring it to operating condition.
- LRHF traded a GG-1 to the Southwest Railroad Historical Foundation in Dallas, Texas, for the #3001 in 1982. The Mohawk was moved to Elkhart in April 1984.
- In 1987, the LS&MS Foundation joined with the City of Elkhart to create the NNYCRRM and formally placed the 3001 on loan to the Museum for 99 years.
- Restored to NYC livery.
- Purchased by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society in 2023.

Mohawk water tender #3042
Built by ALCO in December 1940 for NYC L-3b "Mohawk" #3042. Retired by the NYC in September 1953, locomotive scrapped in October 1953. Tender saved by the NYC for non-revenue service, converted into diesel fuel tank car.
- Purchased by Ross Rowland for the American Freedom Train in 1975. Used as water tender for Reading #2101 for the American Freedom Train and the Chessie Steam Special from 1975 to 1979. Damaged in a Roundhouse fire in Silver Grove, Kentucky along with #2101 on March 6, 1979.
- Sold to Bob Spaugh in the 1980s.
- Donated by Spaugh to the NNYCRRM in 1986 or 1987, Displayed behind #3001 Mohawk.
- Sold to the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society in September 2023.
NYC #4085 E-8
NYC #4085 E-8 built in 1953 by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors. Passenger A unit.
- Was lead locomotive of the eastbound 20th Century Limited when it left Chicago, Illinois for its final run to New York City on December 2, 1967.
- Purchased by the NNYCRRM from New Jersey Rail Operations in 1987.
- Restored to NYC lightning stripe livery.
GG-1 Penn Central #4882
GG-1 Penn Central #4882. Originally Pennsylvania Railroad, now painted in Penn Central black livery. Built by Altoona Works in 1939.
- Purchased by the NNYCRRM from New Jersey Rail Operations in 1987.
- Restored to black PC livery.
