Visiting the Museum
What are the museum’s hours?
The museum is open Wednesday–Saturday, 10:00 AM–5:00 PM (EST). The museum is closed on major holidays, including New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.
How long does it take to go through the museum?
Visit times vary. Depending on how long you spend exploring exhibits and the rolling stock yard, visits can range from 30 minutes to several hours. The average visit is about one hour.
Where do I park?
Parking is available through the museum gate on Main Street during open hours. During large events, additional parking may be available:
- Behind the museum
- Along Freight Street
- On Main Street
Staff or signage will direct visitors during large events.
Do you have restrooms?
Yes. The museum has ADA-accessible restrooms and a changing table located inside the museum near the model train room.
Tours & Experiences
Do you offer tours?
The museum is self-guided. Guided tours may be available upon request, depending on staff and volunteer availability. Group tours and field trips can be arranged in advance.

Museum Policies
Can I bring food or eat lunch at the museum?
Yes. You may bring food or sack lunches for a picnic:
- Outside In the Observation Car
- In the Event Space
Food is not allowed in exhibit spaces beyond the lobby. Spill-proof water bottles are permitted.
Can I take pictures or video?
Yes. Photography is allowed throughout the museum.
Please:
- Turn off flash
- Respect the privacy of staff and other visitors
Accessibility
Is the museum ADA accessible?
Yes, however, some areas may present challenges due to historic equipment.
Examples include:
- Observation Car entrance (24 inches wide)
- Gallery Coach (accessible emergency exit available)
- Rolling stock yard requires step ladder access
- #4085 E-8 cab accessible only by stairs
- NIBCO Century Flyer boarding may require assistance
Staff is available to assist when possible.

No. The Council on Aging is located at:

Can I buy Amtrak tickets here?
No. Amtrak tickets are not sold at the museum.

What should I do if a train is blocking the crossing?
If the Main Street crossing is blocked, you can use:
- Prairie Street overpass
- Benham Avenue underpass
Museum History
Why is the New York Central Museum in Elkhart?
Elkhart has played a major role in rail transportation since 1851. The New York Central System was once one of the largest railroads in the United States, and Elkhart became a key hub. Today, the museum preserves this history and highlights the impact of railroads on the city and region.

#3001 Locomotive
Is the #3001 still at the museum?
Yes. The #3001 Mohawk will remain at the museum until at least summer 2026.
Who owns the #3001?
The locomotive is owned by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society (FWRHS).
Will the #3001 return after restoration?
The goal is to restore the locomotive to operational condition and potentially include future excursions. While not guaranteed, there is hope it will return to Elkhart in the future.
How will the #3001 be moved?
The locomotive will be transported by rail to FWRHS facilities. This requires significant preparation and coordination with Norfolk Southern.
