The Elkhart Fire Department’s Fire Division provides professional fire suppression and rescue services from seven stations strategically located throughout the city. With a minimum daily staffing level of 37 firefighters, the division operates five engines, two squads, one ladder truck, two battalion chiefs, and four ambulances, ensuring a rapid and effective response to emergencies across all districts. The ambulances are staffed by cross-trained firefighter-paramedics who also contribute to fireground staffing as part of an integrated response model.
Elkhart firefighters approach every incident with an aggressive, coordinated, and safety-driven mindset that emphasizes decisive action, teamwork, and accountability. The City of Elkhart currently holds an Insurance Services Office (ISO) Class 2 rating, recognizing excellence in staffing, training, deployment, and community fire protection. The Fire Division continues to enhance operations and strengthen partnerships with the City’s Water Department and 911 Communications Center as it strives toward achieving a Class 1 designation—the highest rating attainable for fire protection services.
Guided by its mission to preserve life, protect property, and safeguard communities through relentless commitment to preparedness, prevention, response, and recovery, the Fire Division serves the citizens of Elkhart with integrity, courage, and professionalism.
