Department of Redevelopment

In 1960, the Indiana state legislature authorized cities and towns to create departments of redevelopment to serve in a public and governmental capacity, in cooperation with private enterprise, for the purpose of clearing, replanning, and redeveloping blighted areas.

For over 65 years, Elkhart’s Department of Redevelopment has been delivering on those responsibilities. Whether it’s been the clearing of unsafe and abandoned properties for new housing or business opportunities, through financial commitments that have allowed transformative developments to materialize, or by allocating matching funds to secure competitive grants for projects that improve the quality of our neighborhoods, these commitments have provided the city with safe, attractive, livable, and vibrant spaces.
