Elkhart Lead Free

The City of Elkhart, Indiana, is committed to creating safer, healthier homes for all residents. Through actively pursuing federal resources—such as HUD’s Lead Hazard Reduction Capacity Building Grant —the City works to reduce lead paint hazards in older housing and protect children from the dangers of lead exposure.

The Elkhart Lead Free program builds on this mission by focusing on comprehensive training, targeted hazard control (including dust, paint, and soil), and strong community partnerships. Together, we are making meaningful progress toward ensuring every family in Elkhart can live in a healthy, lead-safe home.

We convene and connect partners to prevent and eliminate lead poisoning in children, providing families with the resources they need to create safe and healthy homes.

The City of Elkhart will be a place where all children, particularly those in vulnerable communities, can live, learn, and play free from the harmful effects of lead exposure.

Protecting Children from Lead Poisoning

Lead is a toxic heavy metal that can be found throughout a child's environment. Data shows that no amount of lead in the blood is safe. The biggest risk of lead exposure in Indiana occurs through lead-based paint.

Children get lead poisoning from swallowing dirt on their hands and toys or breathing in lead from dust. Practice lead safety at home to help reduce the risk of lead exposure.

Testing All Children

Indiana requires healthcare providers to determine whether children aged 6 and younger have been tested for lead poisoning and to offer the screening to test for elevated blood lead levels.

Contractors must protect residents and workers during any renovation.
In homes built before 1978, any work that disturbs paint must follow lead-safe practices to prevent exposure to hazardous lead dust and debris.
