Rules & Outdoor Use 🏡
Is fishing allowed?

Yes. Fishing is permitted, and state regulations apply. Fishing areas include the Elkhart River and Christner Pond.

Do you accept animals?

No. If you are looking to rehome a domesticated animal, please get in touch with the Humane Society of Elkhart County. The site contains wildlife, including predators such as coyotes and foxes, and is not a safe place to abandon animals. Rehabilitated wildlife should only be relocated in accordance with state and county regulations and through a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

Are motorized vehicles allowed on the trails?

No. Motorized vehicles are not permitted on trails. E-bikes are allowed.

Can I forage for wild edible plants?

Yes, foraging is allowed for private consumption only (not for commercial use). Please be respectful of the site and the wildlife that rely on these plants. We encourage following sustainable practices by taking no more than 5–10% of a plant population. The site may be treated with herbicides. If you plan to forage, please contact staff ahead of your visit for information about treated areas.

Can I remove plants from the property?

No. Removing plants without permission is prohibited. Staff and volunteers work hard to maintain and improve the site. Please do not remove plants or disturb wildlife habitats.

Can I trap or relocate animals?

No. Wildlife may not be trapped or removed. If you have concerns about an animal, please contact staff at 574-293-5070 or EECmail@cityofelkhartin.gov

What should I do if I find injured wildlife?

Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. The Indiana DNR provides a list of approved providers.
