Are you interested in becoming a firefighter for the City of Elkhart? Here is how the process works.

The Elkhart Fire Department hiring process occurs approximately every two years unless there are no qualified candidates left.

**Step 1:** Complete an online application provided by the city.

**Step 2:** Take a written exam, which is administered online.

**Step 3:** Pass a physical agility test using a certified Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) course. This test includes the following tasks:
1. Stair Climber
2. Hose Drag
3. Equipment Carry
4. Ladder Raise and Extension
5. Forcible Entry
6. Search
7. Rescue
8. Ceiling Breach and Pull

During this test, you will wear a 50-pound vest and gloves. While performing the stair climber task, an additional 25 pounds will be placed on your shoulders. You must complete the entire course in under 10 minutes and 20 seconds.

**Step 4:** Attend an interview with the Fire Chief, their designees, and a representative from the city.

**Step 5:** If you are selected for hire, a conditional letter of employment will be sent to you. This letter will inform you of when to go to Indiana Public Medical, which will conduct an in-depth medical examination and psychological evaluation.

**Step 6:** You will receive a hire date if you successfully complete all of the above steps.
