UPDATED RELEASE: EPD Investigating Shooting, E Windsor Ave/Co Rd 9, 4.13.26

UPDATE: Yesterday we released initial information about a non-fatal shooting that occurred near the 600 block of E Windsor Ave/Co Rd 9 in which a male victim was injured and a suspect was detained. Initial investigation indicates that a 16-year-old male accidentally fired a handgun while handling it, striking a 19-year-old male family member in the back of the head (occurring at 831 E Windsor Ave).

The victim was transported to the hospital for evaluation and treatment of what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries. After further investigation, the 16-year-old was released to a parent/guardian and this case will be forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office for review. Please be advised that under Indiana law an individual is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The Elkhart Police Department continues to actively investigate a non-fatal shooting that occurred earlier this evening in the area of the 600 block of E Windsor Ave/Co Rd 9, Elkhart.

Today, April 12, 2026, at about 9:02 p.m., the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a shooting with injuries in the 600 block of E Windsor Ave/Co Rd 9. Elkhart Police Department officers and first responders dispatched to the area and arrived shortly thereafter. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim with an apparent gunshot wound. Elkhart Fire Department Medics transported the victim to the hospital for evaluation and treatment. At the issuance of this release, we do not have an update on his condition.

Officers detained an individual in connection with this investigation, which is still ongoing. This is believed to be an isolated incident and there is no further danger to the public. We will release updates on this investigation as we are able to do so.
