News Release-Man Arrested on Preliminary Charges in Shots Fired Investigation, 2801 Toledo Rd, 5.30.26
The Elkhart Police Department arrested a 29-year-old man after responding to a shots fired call yesterday evening at 2801 Toledo Rd, Elkhart.
Yesterday, May 29, 2026, at approximately 8:52 p.m., the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received a 911 call of shots fired at 2801 Toledo Rd (The Retreat Apartments). Elkhart Police Department officers dispatched and arrived in the area shortly thereafter. Initial investigation indicates that a male resident of the building (suspect) allegedly shot from his apartment toward another male resident who was standing outside the building. No injuries were reported from the incident.
During the investigation, officers obtained and executed a judicial search warrant for the suspect’s apartment. Suspect, identified as Keith Barrier, Jr., 29 years old, of Elkhart was arrested and booked into the Elkhart County Jail yesterday evening on preliminary charges of Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon, a Level 6 Felony; Possession of Paraphernalia, a Class C Misdemeanor; and Possession of Marijuana, a Class B Misdemeanor. Earlier today an Elkhart County judicial officer found probable cause for his arrest and ordered him held without bond until his hearing on June 4th. This case has been forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office for review of formal criminal charges.
