News Release-Elkhart Police Department Investigating Shooting that Injured a Small Child, W Garfield Ave, 6.23.26

 

The Elkhart Police Department is actively investigating an early morning shooting that injured a sleeping child in the 1000 block of W Garfield Ave, Elkhart.

This morning, June 23, 2026, at about 12:58 a.m., an Elkhart Police Department officer responded to the sounds of shots fired in the 1000 block of W. Garfield Ave. Initial investigation indicates that a 2-year-old girl was asleep inside the residence when gunfire hit the home, striking the child. Her parents took her to Elkhart General Hospital, where she was later transported by med flight to IU Pediatric Trauma Center (Riley Hospital). At last information she was in critical condition.

Elkhart Police Department officers collected evidence at the scene. At this time, no arrests have been made, and this remains an active and ongoing investigation.
