Updated News Release: Fatal Car vs. Pedestrian Crash Investigation, S Nappanee St

Update, 6/19/26 at 1:10 p.m.: We are providing an update with the name of the victim from yesterday evening’s fatal car vs. pedestrian crash near 3310 S Nappanee St. She was identified as Norma Sanchez Mateos, 28 years old of Elkhart.

As previously released, initial investigation indicates that a BMW struck Ms. Sanchez Mateos and her child as they were crossing the street at this location.

As also previously released, her 2-year-old girl was transported to the hospital for evaluation and treatment of a head injury. We do not have a current update on her condition. The 22-year-old male driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and we will provide further details as we are able to do so.

Original Release, 6.19.26:

The Elkhart Police Department is investigating a fatal car vs. pedestrian crash that occurred late last night in the 3300 block of S Nappanee St, Elkhart.

Yesterday evening, June 18, 2026, at approximately 11:37 p.m., the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received a 911 call of a car vs. pedestrian crash with injuries near 3310 S Nappanee St. Elkhart City Police officers and first responders dispatched and arrived at the scene shortly thereafter. Initial investigation indicates that a BMW struck a woman and her child as they were crossing the street at this location.  Elkhart Fire Department medics rendered first aid at the scene and transported the child, a 2-year-old girl, to the hospital for evaluation and treatment of a head injury; she was in stable condition at last information. Sadly, the 28-year-old mother died early this morning from her injuries.

The vehicle driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and we will provide further details as we are able to do so.
