News Release-Elkhart County Regional SWAT Activated After Shots Fired in Domestic Disturbance Call, Fremont St; Ongoing Investigation, 10.16.26

Elkhart County Regional SWAT was activated and assisted in clearing a residence in the 800 block of Fremont St, Elkhart, after a man fired from the house while Elkhart Police Department officers were responding to a domestic disturbance call. At this time, the suspect has not been located, and this remains an active and ongoing investigation.

On October 16, 2026, at approximately 9:59 a.m., the Elkhart 911 Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance involving a possibly armed individual at a residence in the 800 block of Fremont Street in Elkhart.

Elkhart Police Department officers were dispatched and arrived in the area shortly thereafter. While officers were on scene, a male suspect inside the residence fired multiple shots from an upstairs window. One round struck an occupied Dodge Charger on the roadway outside the residence. The male driver was not injured, and no other injuries were reported.

Two adult females and a young child exited the residence while officers were on scene. A juvenile female later exited as well. Out of an abundance of caution, EPD officers also attempted to evacuate adjacent residences and evacuated one individual from a neighboring home.

Officers were unable to definitively confirm whether the suspect had left the residence. Because officers could not confirm whether the suspect had left the residence, the Elkhart County Regional SWAT team was activated at approximately 10:44 a.m. to assist with clearing the residence and confirming that there were no remaining injured individuals inside. SWAT members attempted to call out anyone who may have remained inside before entering and clearing the residence. No additional individuals were located inside.

SWAT began clearing the scene at approximately 1:15 p.m., and Fremont Street was reopened to traffic shortly afterward.

Elkhart Police Department officers and technicians continue to process the scene. At this time, the suspect has not been located, and no arrests have been made. This remains an active and ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Elkhart Police Department at 574-295-7070 or Michiana Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP.
