Here is a statement from Chief Milanese about his decision:
"I will be stepping down from my position as Chief of Police. My last official day will be May 10th. Assistant Chief Whitmyer has been selected as interim Chief while Mayor Roberson conducts the process for selecting and appointing a new Chief for the Elkhart Police Department.
This decision was made after much reflection, prayer, and discussions with my family.
After three years as Chief, I could not be more proud of this department and all we have accomplished together. Serving in this capacity has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my career.
At this time, I feel it is important to shift my focus to other areas of my life, including spending more time with my family. I also believe this is the right time to allow others the opportunity to step into leadership roles.
During my tenure, our department advanced the public safety priorities of this administration, all while upholding the highest standards of professionalism, honor, and service to our community. I have full confidence that Interim Chief Whitmyer and the Command Staff will continue to build on this progress.
It has been my distinct honor to serve the community and the great men and women of this department. Our officers serve with integrity, compassion, professionalism and with hearts dedicated to protecting our community. I look forward to my next chapter serving alongside them once again as a Detective in our Criminal Investigations Division. I will be taking some much needed time off to spend with family before reporting to C.I.D.
I want to thank the Mayor for granting me this invaluable experience and for supporting the vision for this department. I look forward to continuing to serve our great City and this profession in my new role."
